Introduction

As the 2025 Marketing & Creative Specialist at The Fred Otto DiscoverE Program, I created engaging visual content to support DiscoverE's engineering initiative.  My work included designing student worksheets, promotional materials, and swag items, as well as producing and editing videos and photos (at least 4000 photos!).  I managed DiscoverE’s online presence by crafting graphics for social media and maintaining brand consistency.  Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and Google Workspace, I brought creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills to every project.

Background

The Fred Otto DiscoverE Program

The Fred Otto DiscoverE Program is a student-led initiative of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta, dedicated to inspiring youth through hands-on STEM education. Since 1993, this not-for-profit program has worked to break down barriers for underrepresented groups by offering inclusive learning opportunities. DiscoverE reaches communities across Canada through traveling workshops, gender-diverse programs, financial bursaries, and free classroom kits. With a strong focus on accessibility and engagement, the program empowers the next generation of innovators while fostering a love for science and engineering.

fem+ Mentorship Program

The fem+ Mentorship Program is a 7-month initiative by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta designed for women, non-binary, and 2SLGBTQ+ high school students exploring the possibilities of engineering. Through one-on-one mentorship, interactive events, and informational sessions, fem+ provides guidance on university applications, engineering pathways, and student life. With a focus on breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity, the program connects participants with engineering students and professionals to help them make informed decisions about their future.

My Design Process at DiscoverE

1. Moodboard & Research

After I've received a task, my first step is to look for inspiration and research similar projects, to see what I like, and what I don't like.  My go to is Pinterest, but I also use previous DiscoverE work to inspire my projects.

  1. Ideating

After I have got a general idea of what I want to do for the project.  I will draw a couple rough sketches and pick my favourite, if I cannot decide I seek the opinion of my supervisor to help me.  In the images below, I chose the one on the left, and with some amazing feedback I created the front page of the handbill mentioned further up.

  1. Execution & Iterations

Now that I have an idea, and a rough plan, I begin creating my project with the appropriate platform.

Feedback is a huge step in my design process, so once I have completed a draft, I seek the opinions of my supervisor, other management, and occasionally my coworkers.  I repeat the execution and draft step over and over until I have created a design I am happy with.

Another small project I have done was to complete an asset sheet for ease of use when creating designs.  I collected all the previous assets I could find and organized them into an illustrator file, perfect for copy pasting high quality assets into other Adobe programs.

  1. Completion

After adding final touches, it is time to submit the project.  I add the final project, and source file(s) to the drive if applicable.  Leave a comment in the tracking doc/sheet updating my supervisor of my work, and then I move onto the next project!

Reflection

Working for DiscoverE has been an amazing experience and has taught me what it means to work for a caring and healthy workplace.  I loved working with our team, everyone was so welcoming and I met some amazing friends.
